Ocean Tides Dishcloth – Free Crochet Pattern

Grab some cotton from your stash and a crochet hook, because I have a new free dishcloth pattern for you! The Ocean Tides Dishcloth pattern combines cluster stitches and single crochet to mimic the gentle movement of tides in the ocean. This dishcloth not only serves a practical purpose because it’s thick and sturdy, but adds a touch of coastal elegance to your home. You can use this cloth in your kitchen or bathroom, and it makes a lovely gift as well!

Yarn

I use Dishie cotton from KnitPicks for most of my dishcloths. It is high quality, soft, and squishy! It also comes in a beautiful variety of colors. If you’d like to check out Dishie, click here. I used the color “Inlet” for this dishcloth.

Materials

Here is what you’ll need to make this dishcloth:

  • 30 grams of worsted weight (4) cotton yarn. 100% cotton is best for dishcloths.
  • Size H/8 – 5.0MM crochet.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape
Abbreviations

ch(s) – chain(s)

sc – single crochet

cl – cluster

st(s) – stitch(es)

sk – skip

** – repeat what is in between

Cluster stitch

The cluster stitch in this pattern is a bit different than others, so I wanted to provide you a little tutorial for how to make it.

Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook into the ch space from the row below and pull up one loop. Yarn over and pull your hook through the first loop on the hook. You should have 3 loops left on the hook.

Step 2: Yarn over, insert hook into the same space again and pull up one loop. Yarn over and pull your hook through the first loop on the hook. You should have 5 loops on the hook.

Step 3: Yarn over and pull your hook through all 5 loops on the hook. The cluster stitch is now complete!

Pattern

This pattern makes a dishcloth that measures approx. 7×7 inches (18x18cm).

With a size H/8 – 5.00MM crochet hook, ch 31.

Row 1: starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, *sc, ch 1, sk 1 ch* until 2 chs remain. sk 1 ch, sc in the last ch. turn work. (15 scs + 16 chs including the starting chs)

Row 2: ch 2. sk the first sc and cl in the ch 1 space. *ch 1, sk 1, cl in ch space* until the end of the row. the last cl is in the ch 2 space from the previous row. turn work. (15 cl sts + 16 chs including the starting chs)

Row 3: ch 2. sc in the ch space between clusters, *ch 1, sc in the ch space* until the end of the row. the last sc is in the ch 2 space from the previous row. turn work. (15 scs, 16 chs including the starting chs)

Row 4: ch 2. sk the first sc and cl in the ch 1 space. *ch 1, sk 1, cl in ch space* until the end of the row. the last cl is in the ch 2 space from the previous row. turn work. (15 cl sts + 16 chs including the starting chs)

Repeat Rows 3-4 until you have 9 cluster rows. Work one more Row 3, then begin the border without turning. You can do any border you like, but here is what I did:

Border

sc down the left side of the dishcloth. place 2 sc in the corner. *sc, ch 1* across the bottom of the dishcloth to match the top. place 2 sc in the corner. then sc up the right side of the dishcloth. place 2 sc in the corner, join with the first sc at the top of the dishcloth and fasten off.

Weave in all ends and enjoy your new dishcloth!

Let me know in a comment what color you made. 🙂
