Mini Beanie Ornament – Free Knitting Pattern

Looking for a quick, adorable project to use up those leftover bits of yarn? This mini beanie ornament is the perfect solution! Whether you’re sprucing up your holiday tree, adding a handmade touch to gift wrapping, these tiny hats are simply delightful.

With just a few scraps of yarn and a little bit of time, you can create a unique ornament that makes a wonderful keepsake or gift. Gather your needles, grab your stash, and let’s knit!

Materials

  • approx. 7 grams of fingering weight (1) yarn held double, or DK weight (3) yarn held alone
  • US 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needles, DPNs or at least 32″ length circular needles for Magic Loop
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Size

The finished beanie with the brim folded measures approx. 2×2″ (5x5cm) not including the height of the pom pom

Pattern

Cast on 26 stitches and join to knit in the round

Knit 6 rounds of 1:1 (knit 1, purl 1) ribbing

Knit 2″ (5cm) of stockinette (all knit stitches)

Decreases:

Round 1: Knit 2 together until the end of the round (13 stitches left)

Round 2: Knit all stitches

Round 3: Knit 2 together until 1 stitch is left, then knit the last stitch (7 stitches left)

Cut yarn, leaving a 6″ (15 cm) tail and thread through tapestry needle. Slip
each remaining stitch off the left knitting needle with the tapestry needle and pull tight to
close beanie. Turn inside out and weave in all ends.

When you are finished, make sure to fold the brim up. You can give it a light press with an iron if you want it to lay flatter.

Pom pom:

You can use your fingers to make a tiny yarn pom pom!

  • Wrap yarn around 3 fingers until desired thickness. The more you wrap, the fuller your pom pom will be.
  • Slip off fingers and lay over a piece of yarn approx. 10″ (25 cm) long.
  • Tie yarn in a tight knot around the middle of the wrapped yarn.
  • Snip each side short and shape into a round ball for the pom pom.
  • Thread through the top of the beanie and secure inside.

I hope you enjoyed this quick, scrappy beanie ornament pattern! I attached a piece of twine to mine to hang it on the tree. Tag me on Instagram if you make one and post a picture @kneedlesandlife!
