Madeline turned ONE on Monday! I can’t believe how quickly this year flew by and that I’m already the mom of a toddler! With the pandemic and everything going on, we decided to safely celebrate her special day at home. We had a sweet visit with her grandparents through our glass door over the weekend and FaceTimed with other family members. I am so thankful for technology right now!
It rained and rained for day but on the morning of her birthday we had a nice window where it was just cloudy and she got to eat her cake outside in the back yard!
Overall, it was a beautiful day together and I’m so excited to see what year two brings!

I baked a “healthy” smash cake from a recipe on Pinterest that was sooo delicious! It’s basically banana bread sweetened with apple sauce. Maddie mostly ate the berries on top LOL so I may bake the cake again for a summer treat! You can find the recipe here. I used these 6″ smash cake pans from Amazon and they worked perfectly. You will need to double the recipe to make enough for 2 pans.
I baked the cake the day before and wrapped each one tightly in plastic wrap and let them sit out at room temperature. The morning of her birthday I decorated it and then left it in the fridge until it was time to eat it so the whip cream didn’t melt.
Instead of making the blueberry icing like the recipe, I simply bought some whip cream and spread it on each layer. I cut up fresh strawberries and blueberries and sprinkled them on top of the whip cream and around the edge of the plate. My favorite thing about this cake is that it’s not only yummy, but really beautiful too! I topped it with a big, gold candle that just brought the whole look together.
I looked at highchair decorations on Amazon and Etsy before deciding to just decorate her highchair myself. I made a tassel garland with some scrap yarn and a 16″ rose gold 1 balloon I found on Amazon. I put together a tutorial video on how I made the tassels if you have never made them before. You don’t need any crafting experience, just some yarn and scissors! Check out the video below to make your own garland or some tassels for fun!
I had wanted to hire a photographer for first birthday portraits, but well, ya know. So I got my iPhone and did them myself in the front yard. I’m really happy with how they turned out! The balloon was also a special touch for a porp. The idea was for her to hold it, but you how it is with babies… 🙂
She wore a simple romper from Old Navy and a flower crown I ordered from Amazon. It came looking beautiful and exactly like the picture. It has a felt back for comfort and comes in a lot of different colors and flowers. Click here to find it!
I use Lou Marks Photo Aloe Vera Presets to edit all of my photos. It’s a really beautiful, natural looking filter, especially for outdoor photos. Click here to shop their presets on Etsy.
We cleared out our dining room and turned it into a little playroom that is connected to the living room. Maddie’s grandparents gave her a teepee and the gorgeous cuddle + kind unicorn. I’ve been drooling over those gorgeous stuffies on Instagram for years now!
We gave her this super cute ball pit. The sides are memory foam and really soft. You’ll have to buy the balls separately so we this bag of 400 balls and it fills the pit up perfectly. She’s still getting used to sitting in it but she likes playing with the balls!
We put some throw pillows in the teepee and of course one of my rainbow pillows. She also loves this Wee Baby Stella Doll and I do too! She’s great for a first baby doll and comes with a little magnetic bottle, paci, book and bear.
Another thing we gave her is this pretty name puzzle. I found these on Etsy and the colors match her nursery. The shipping is super fast too if you need a last minute gift! We also gave her some books from Amazon as well! You can find all my Amazon favorites by clicking here. The unicorn and narwhal Golden Books are really cute. I got those because her original party was going to be unicorn and narwhal themed.
