Evergreen Ribbed Beanie – Free Knitting Pattern

Meet the Evergreen Ribbed Beanie – a cozy, classic knit for anyone to wear! This timeless design features a folded brim and slouchy crown. The Aran/heavy worsted weight yarn adds extra warmth but doesn’t look too bulky on your head.

This is an intermediate knitting pattern, but ambitious beginners are welcome to make it! I have linked helpful YouTube videos for some steps throughout the pattern, but if you need any help with anything else, you can probably search for it on YouTube yourself, or email me for additional help at kneedlesandlife@gmail.com.

Notions

US 8 / 5.0mm 16″ circular needles

US 8 / 5.0mm Double Pointed Needles or US 8 / 5.0mm needles with a long cord for Magic Loop for the crown of the hat

1 Beginning of Round stitch marker and 7 additional markers

Scissors

Measuring tool

Tapestry needle

Yarn

175 yards of Aran/Heavy Worsted weight (4) yarn

I used a skein of Aran yarn from Ruby & Roses Yarn. The sample was made with the Chauffeur colorway from the Downton Abbey collection. If you order from Ruby & Roses for the very first time, you can save $5 with the code KNEEDLESANDLIFE.

Please use any heavy worsted yarn you have available! Check your gauge and adjust the needles size if needed to make sure your finished beanie will fit!

Gauge

6 stitches of 1:1 (k1, p1) rib = 1″ unstretched.

The height of your gauge is not important.

Size

Fits an average size (21-23″) adult head.

Finished beanie is approx. 7″ wide and 12.5″ tall when the brim is unfolded.

I wet blocked my beanie and let it dry flat to let the ribbing and crown decreases bloom.

Pattern

Cast on 88 sts using the Long Tail Tubular Cast On method. Do not join to work in the round. I found this video to be helpful with this cast on method, but if you prefer to sub it for a different method, skip the setup rows, join to work in the round and go straight to Round 1.

Setup Row 1: *k1 tbl, sl 1 wyif* to end.

Setup Row 2: *k1, sl 1 wyif* to end.

Place your BOR marker on the right needle and join to work in the round by starting Round 1. Be careful not to twist your cast on rows when joining.

Round 1: *k1, p1* to end.

Repeat Round 1 until the beanie measures 9″ tall from the cast on edge. If you have a large head and need extra slouch, work until 10″ tall. My head is 23″ and I opted for 10″.

Crown/Decreases

Remove the BOR marker, k1 st, then place the BOR marker back on the right needle.

Setup: *Work 19 sts in rib pattern, pm, ssk, k1, pm* to end. The last “pm” is the BOR marker. (4 sts decreased)

Round 1: *k2tog, work in rib pattern to 2 sts before marker, ssk, sm, k2, sm* to end. (8 sts decreased)

Round 2: Work in pattern with no decreases. The 2 sts between the markers are always k sts.

Round 3: *p2tog, work in rib pattern to 2 sts before marker, p2togtbl, sm, k2, sm* to end. (8 sts decreased)

Round 4: Work in pattern with no decreases. The 2 sts between the markers are always k sts.

Repeat Rounds 1-4 until there are 20 sts left. Then work the next 2 rounds. When your sts begin to feel tight on 16″ circular needles, switch to working the Magic Loop method on a longer cord, or Double Pointed Needles.

Round 1: K all the k sts and p all the p sts while removing the markers (except BOR).

Round 2: k2tog 2x, ssk 2x, k2tog 3x, ssk 3x. (10 sts remain)

Cut yarn, leaving a 10″ tail and thread through a tapestry needle. Slip each remaining st off the left needle with the tapestry needles and pull tight to cinch the beanie closed. Turn inside out and weave in the end. If you worked a tubular cast on, you will need to sew the join a bit with the yarn tail on that end. Weave that tail in on the outside of the beanie so it is hidden when the brim is folded.

I wet blocked my beanie to help my ribbing and crown bloom nicely and look neater. Enjoy wearing or gifting your brand new beanie and make sure to leave a review!

xoxo, kalley

Love this beanie pattern and I’m at my desired length – I would say I’m an ambitions new knitter – I’m getting stuck at the crown decrease..
Do I have to do the “setup” round? Or is this optional (like at the beginning). I cast on 88sts and I have left over stitches🤷🏼‍♀️
